It’s coming towards the time of the year that many people start to think about prescription sunglasses. Over the past 5 years, here in the UK, we have seen a very inconsistent pattern of warm and sunny periods, so now is a good time as any to start to stock up on the sun tan lotion and invest in a decent pair of prescription sunglasses. We are constantly being reminded, courtesy of the tabloids and such, about the amount of damage UV rays can do to our skin. But do we know enough about the dangers that harmful UV rays pose to our eyes? You see, UV rays in all its forms, from the suns natural UV to a sun beds artificial rays, can severely damage the tissues that protect the surface of your eye. The problem is that these harmful rays will burn the surface of your eyes, just as they burn your skin when left unprotected with a UV blocking lotion. Obviously, wearing a pair of prescription sunglasses with UV filters will give you complete protection from these harmful rays.

UVA and UVB – How dangerous are they?

For the eyes, it’s the UVA and UVB rays that are the most damaging, when left exposed without the protection of prescription sunglasses. These two dangerous forms of UV can also cause a condition known as ‘photokeratitis’ which can happen when your eyes have been exposed to UV radiation combined with cold wind and snowy conditions. Photokeratitis causes an inflammation of the cornea but it rarely causes any permanent to the eyes. Prescritpion sunglassesThe symptoms are redness and irritation of the eyes and some people complain of experiencing temporary light sensitivity. Just remember, the next time you venture outdoors in the snow, on a bright day, without a pair of prescription sunglasses, you are probably doing your eyes more damage than you realise.

Buying prescription sunglasses online?

People, who require prescription sunglasses but choose not to wear them, over a long period of time, can also suffer from early cataract or, even worse, permanent damage to the retina. Any damage to your retina is normally irreversible so this is something you want to avoid at all costs. Buying a pair of prescription sunglasses to protect your eyes need not cost the earth. These days there are numerous online glasses retailers who offer these for less than £50. As always, just make sure that before you purchase anything, you do your homework on the company you are going to use. Try to avoid retailers based outside of the EU as they may have different regulations on the amount of  UV protection your lenses should have, in accordance with EU regulations. Don’t forget, even if you find an online glasses supplier that has a frame style to suite your requirements, but the price is a couple of pounds over your budget, it will be one of the wisest investments you are ever likely to make. After all, you simply cannot put a price on your vision can you?

Bought my prescription sunglasses from China for £1.67 from e-bay. Does this mean that they might not have the proper UV protection, I’m a bit worried now.

  3. Buzz says:

@Liaza – Take your prescription sunglasses to an opticians and they should be able to tell you if they have UV protection or not. I bought some online from Ebay and took them to Vision Express, they put them under a small machine and told me that they were not filtered, they didn’t charge me.
