For me, just the very mention of the word ‘Capri’ conjures up images of 1980′s sports cars, ‘Alfie Moon’ from Eastenders and those uber slick detectives, Bodie and Doyle, ‘The Professionals’. The last ‘Ford Capri’ car was produced in 1986 but 30 years on, the name ‘Capri’ is about to become very cool again Thanks to the People from ‘Persol’ designer eye-wear. It’s rather refreshing to see that Persol have cooled down trying to promote their Steve McQueen styled range of eye-wear for something rather different.

The Italians are rather frond of the colour blue for some reason.

The very latest addition to their celebrity status sunglasses collection is the Persol ‘Capri’. These sunglasses are every bit what you would expect from the Italian brand and maintain the same high quality workmanship and design detail that they have become synonymous for.

The ‘Capri’ collection of sunglasses pay homage to the Isle of Capri, based in the Italian province of Naples. The Capri sunglasses collection captures everything that is beautiful and majestic about the Italian Isle, particularly the modern and contemporary architecture of the Casa Malaparte, a famous Villa on the Isle which is home to one of the most iconic rooftop patios in the world (see where I’m going here?..thought so). Persol have managed to encapsulate the sleek and cool look of the iconic rooftop patio into the design of the frame by implementing some clever detail onto the end of the frames arms. Even the famous Persol arrow on the hinge of the arms has been styled on the Casa Malapartes perimeter shape.

The good people over at eyewearbrands.com are currently selling these happening sunshades for a bargain £170. That’s just under half the price you would expect to pay in a high street store!

For some people, in the past, buying cheap spectacles at your local opticians or on the internet was seen as too much of a risk. This was mainly due to the fact that, for some reason, many spectacle wearers believe that if you purchase a cheap pair of glasses then it could effect your vision. The fact is that just because you purchase a cheap pair of prescription glasses doesn’t mean that it will have a detrimental effect on your eye sight. Most opticians generally use the same grade of lenses when they make your spectacles with single vision lenses (distance or reading), regardless of price. The only thing you might compromise when buying a cheap pair of spectacles is the quality of the frame. This is largely due to the fact that the majority of expensive frames are made using high grade nickel for their joints and the main parts (front and arms) are made from titanium or a similar grade material. When buying cheap spectacles, you will generally receive a frame that is made using low grade materials and therefore might not last as long.

One of the main reasons why many people prefer to shop for cheap spectacles is that they need a second pair of glasses, just in case their main pair should break. If you only require your glasses for either reading or distance then buying a cheap back-up pair is always a good idea as they will get you by until your main pair are either fixed or replaced. There are many retailers who sell budget prescription glasses but some of the best deals can be found on the internet. This is largely due to the fact that most online retailers can afford to be very competitive with their prices compared to that of most high street retailers. Most ‘online only’ retailers operate with very little cost as they have no Opticians salary to pay, due to the fact that are not in the business of conducting eye tests, and their building rent is generally much lower than that of a high street retailer. But just because they operate online does not mean that they have a lower standard of practice when it comes to making your cheap spectacles.

Every online prescription glasses retailer in the UK has to adhere to the regulations as set out by the UK’s General Optical Council (GOC). So even if you buy some cheap spectacles online, they will have to be made to exactly the same standards as pair of glasses that have been purchased from a high street optician. Also, every prescription lens optical lab in the UK must have a qualified dispensing optician on the premises so that they can check and sign out every pair of prescription glasses before they are shipped to the customer. So you see, just because you might have taken the decision to buy a cheap pair of glasses online, doesn’t mean to say that you are more likely to suffer problems with them compared with buying them from your local optician. The only thing you might want to consider, if you are buying cheap spectacles, is making sure that you go with a reputable online retailer. You should already have all the necessary tools available in order to source the right company to do this; Google and consumer forums. Or you might want to take a look at some of the online prescription glasses websites that our forum members recommend.

Reglazing your own frame with a pair of spectacle lenses is nothing new in the opticians retail sector. In fact, most high street opticians have been offering this type of service for many years. The only problem is that they don’t really like to advertise this service as it generally means less profit for their business. Most high street opticians would much prefer for you to buy a whole new set of prescription glasses and reap the profit from a complete pair. The trouble for most high street opticians is that many consumers are much more ‘savvy’ these days. They are no longer taken in by the optician informing them that their 18 month old frame is too old and needs to be replaced. This was recently highlighted on a BBC consumer programme that also revealed the huge profits that many opticians make on the frames alone. Because of this, we are now seeing more and more consumers turning to the online optical retailers, in order to replace spectacle lenses into their own frames.

So exactly how does one go about getting their own frame fitted with new spectacle lenses online The reglaze process is fairly straight forward and is almost certain to end up saving you a vast amount of money. You simply send your frame into the the online retailer and they do all the work at their prescription glazing lab. Once the lenses have been fitted, they simply send the updated spectacles back to you with your new prescription lenses fitted. But just how much can you save? Well, that ll depends on what type of lenses you require. For instance, someone with a fairly straight forward prescription, who only needs them for reading, could save around a third of what they would pay on the high street. Where as someone who needs varifocal spectacle lenses can actually save up to half of what a high street opticians would charge. Below are some price comparisons:-

We are constantly being reminded, courtesy of the tabloids and such, about the amount of damage UV rays can do to our skin. But do we know enough about the dangers that harmful UV rays pose to our eyes? Read more on the dangers of UV rays to your eyes and vision.

It’s coming towards the time of the year that many people start to think about prescription sunglasses. Over the past 5 years, here in the UK, we have seen a very inconsistent pattern of warm and sunny periods, so now is a good time as any to start to stock up on the sun tan lotion and invest in a decent pair of prescription sunglasses. We are constantly being reminded, courtesy of the tabloids and such, about the amount of damage UV rays can do to our skin. But do we know enough about the dangers that harmful UV rays pose to our eyes? You see, UV rays in all its forms, from the suns natural UV to a sun beds artificial rays, can severely damage the tissues that protect the surface of your eye. The problem is that these harmful rays will burn the surface of your eyes, just as they burn your skin when left unprotected with a UV blocking lotion. Obviously, wearing a pair of prescription sunglasses with UV filters will give you complete protection from these harmful rays.

UVA and UVB – How dangerous are they?

For the eyes, it’s the UVA and UVB rays that are the most damaging, when left exposed without the protection of prescription sunglasses. These two dangerous forms of UV can also cause a condition known as ‘photokeratitis’ which can happen when your eyes have been exposed to UV radiation combined with cold wind and snowy conditions. Photokeratitis causes an inflammation of the cornea but it rarely causes any permanent to the eyes. The symptoms are redness and irritation of the eyes and some people complain of experiencing temporary light sensitivity. Just remember, the next time you venture outdoors in the snow, on a bright day, without a pair of prescription sunglasses, you are probably doing your eyes more damage than you realise.

Buying prescription sunglasses online?

People, who require prescription sunglasses but choose not to wear them, over a long period of time, can also suffer from early cataract or, even worse, permanent damage to the retina. Any damage to your retina is normally irreversible so this is something you want to avoid at all costs. Buying a pair of prescription sunglasses to protect your eyes need not cost the earth. These days there are numerous online glasses retailers who offer these for less than £50. As always, just make sure that before you purchase anything, you do your homework on the company you are going to use. Try to avoid retailers based outside of the EU as they may have different regulations on the amount of UV protection your lenses should have, in accordance with EU regulations. Don’t forget, even if you find an online glasses supplier that has a frame style to suite your requirements, but the price is a couple of pounds over your budget, it will be one of the wisest investments you are ever likely to make. After all, you simply cannot put a price on your vision can you?

Mykita have rapidly become synonymous in the industry for producing some of the most outstanding quality optical frames in the world, and these are certainly no exception. Their new ‘Mylon’ range of sports frames boast lightweight and outstanding durability, doubled with the fact Mylon frames can be individually adjusted to each wearer for complete comfort and stability. But let me tell you, these are no ordinary frames and are not made using traditional manufacturing techniques. Each frame is produced using state-of-the-art manufacturing methods using a polyamide-powder based material which is then, in turn, transformed into solid objects using lasers. This complex process called ‘Selective Laser Sintering’ was developed and pioneered by Mykita in order to give a sophisticated and luxurious finish in six steps.

If you’ve been keeping one eye on the world of technology then you will almost have certainly come across the concept of 3D printing. This method involves creating a 3D object by laying down successive layers of material through a ’3D printing device’. Well some clever clogs from ‘Colours of Birch’ Jewellers has come up with a pair of real 3D glasses which have been manufactured using a 3D printer.

3D glasses by Colours of Birch

Pekka Salokannel, a Finnish designer, came up with the idea when shooting off ideas for his latest eyewear collection, ‘Titanic’. All his products are designed in Finland and printed in the Netherlands. Could this be the future of eye wear manufacturing? I think not, but what an exciting and innovative collection of frames these truly are. So come on, take of those moody 3D cinema glasses and grab yourself a pair of genuine 3D specks!

Well it looks as though the inevitable has finally happened, the style of glasses that was once made famous by Dame Edna Everage has made a huge comeback this year with Persol, Tom Ford and Ray Ban all releasing similar ‘cats eyes’ retro style frames into their latest collections. This particular model, the ray Ban RX5242 is a beautiful example of the latest retro chic to hit the shops and comes in 4 classic colours, Purple, black, red and Havana. Uber cool and the very latest trend in designer eye wear, these frames are strictly for people who like to have their pulse on the fashion scene. But wait, although these trendy frames are at the top of many wearers ‘wanted list’ I’m finding it very difficult to actually find any online retailers who actually hold these in stock. In fact the only retailer I could find was http://www.lenscrafters.com who actually had a pair of these in stock in purple and black. So there you have it, those Yanks have beaten us to it yet again and will probably be relishing in the knowledge that they are just that little bit ahead of us in terms of what’s happening on the high street with designer eye wear.

Varifocal glasses have been commercially available to the public since 1959 and are often recommended to patients who require glasses for both distance and reading.

Varifocal glasses have been commercially available to the public since 1959 and are often recommended to patients who require glasses for both distance and reading. Although these lenses have been around for some time the actual technology used in the design of the lens has only recently changed dramatically to offer wearers a much better experience in terms of adaption and viewing fields. The company to first pioneer this technology was Essilor, a French lens manufacturer who have almost become a house hold brand over the past few years thanks to some clever advertising. Essilor produce one of the most well known ranges of varifocal lenses which go under the name of ‘Varilux’. The French lens giants offer two of the most popular varifocal lens products in Europe, the Varilux Comfort and the Varilux Physio, both these lenses have very high adaption rates which make them very popular with first time wearers. Most dispensing Opticians love selling Varilux lenses due to the high adaption rate and because of their high margin of error when taking measurements from the patient. In fact, even if the Dispenser is about 2mm out on the fitting height of these lenses this should not affect the performance of the lens.

Frame Choice

If you have recently been advised by your Optician that your prescription requirements and lifestyle would suit Varifocal glasses then the ‘Varilux’ range of lenses are something you should consider especially of you are watching the pennies. Don’t be put off by other people telling you that you need a large, hideous frame to be able to accommodate these lenses as that has all changed since Essilor updated the design of their varifocal range. In fact recently Essilor have re-designed their complete range, in terms of the physics of the lenses, enabling them to be fitted into much smaller frames then ever before but still keeping the performance of the lenses to a maximum. You can know have designer varifocal glasses, without the worry of adaption, in a fairly shallow frame if that is what you require. If you are already a wearer of varifocal lenses then the best place to buy these lenses is on the Internet as you can save up to around half price on these lenses if you ‘Google’ around. Over the next few Weeks we will be reviewing some of the best varifocal glasses lenses available on the market so watch this space..

I touched on these frames a while back and since then I’ve been bombarded with emails and messages asking where you trendy lot can purchase a pair of Dilem frames. The model on the cover picture is ‘Model OD’ taken from the huge selection of different styles that are currently available on the Dilem website. So for all those who desperately want to buy a pair of these ultra exclusive frames you need look no further than either Chiswick Eyewear Opticians, based in London or Chapel Opticians, based in Hampshire. These have been handed the prestigious title of ‘Authorised Dilem Frame Dealership’ because owning a pair of Dilem frames has been likened to owning a Ferrari or any other prestigious make of super car, sounds crazy I know! Our French neighbours go mad over these frames and one famously rich French actress is reported to own 20 pairs with around 50 sets of temple arms…WOW!! That’s a lot of glasses and an even more obscene amount of money.
